Energy Consumption of Retrofitting Universal Turn Drill HQ 400 to CNC
Conventional lathes tend to be time-consuming, expensive, and require highly skilled operators to process complex workpieces. Therefore, retrofitting is an alternative to improve the usability of these machines through numerical control or CNC. This is because retrofitting offers several advantages, namely the ability to add new features and improve the accuracy of machine axis movements. Several studies on retrofit development have focused on integrating instruments by adding accelerometer sensors to monitor specific conditions, one of which is energy consumption. Therefore, this study aims to determine the energy consumption required for three types of cutting processes: linear cutting, tapered cutting, and circular cutting. The results of the retrofit show that the electrical current consumed during the cutting process is 1.9 A for linear cutting, 1.8 A for tapered cutting, and 2.0 A for circular cutting, respectively. The cutting parameters are a cutting depth of 0.5 mm, a feed rate of 100 mm/rev, and a spindle speed of 735 rpm.
