Cruciform Object and Silver Buckle from Mound 21 of Valovyi I Late Sarmatian Burial Ground: Dating and Interpretation

The research offers a comprehensive analysis of two finds made at kurgan 21 of Valovyi burial mound in Rostov Region. The site was examined by an Azov Museum expedition in 1987 led by E.I. Bespalyi. The study focuses on the finds represented by a belt buckle and a cast cross-shaped brass item. The buckle has a faceted oval frame, a rectangular cover and a grid-like decoration. The buckle is attributed to type П8 according to V.Yu. Malashev. The item is dated the late 200s – early 300s. The work aims to conduct a comparative and typological analysis. To attain this goal, the research employs numerous equivalents from Crimea and Western Europe. The cross shaped bronze item is interpreted as a probable local ersatz spur. It is a monolithic piece with no distinctive curve but with three thorns. Such a design arises association with cast enamel spurs found in the Eastern Europe steppe and forest-steppe. Furthermore, it emphasises local craft features. The article overviews relations between this design and the Roman tradition spurs on sleeve belts. This analysis allows to distinguish processes of how cavalry prestigious equipment adapted in the Sarmatian and adjacent environments. There are two items that serve as important sources for studying chronology, craft relations and cultural dynamics in 200s–300s in the region. These items demonstrate local versions of prestigious elements and how western and northern craft traditions manifested in the Late Sarmatian culture.
