Assessment of Flood Risk Map using Remote Sensing Data: A Case Study of Eastern Iraq

Flood is a serious natural hazard, and assessing the risk is an efficient approach for proper planning.Flood studies require accurate data to cover areas of interest, which can be obtained using remote sensing images in a given region. In this study, flood risk mapping was assessed in Eastern Iraq, using GPM precipitation measurements and the STRM digital elevation model.Four criteria were used to produce the flood risk map, namely, elevation, slope, drainage density, and precipitation. The results of the flooding risk assessment show that 30.8% of the areas can be classified as low risk areas, while 34.2% and 35% of the areas are classified as medium and high risk areas, respectively.A risk assessment map could be beneficial for future urban planning, agriculture, and disaster management studies. It could help planners in anticipating future risks and implementing neighboring policies.
