Enhancing Network Reliability in Real-Time Mission Networks (RTMN) Through Improved LAN Configuration

The configuration of a Real-Time Mission Network (RTMN) varies based on mission requirements and environment. In time-critical scenarios, improper configuration can lead to delays or failure of mission operations. Redundant paths are introduced for high availability but can create network loops, often mitigated by protocols like Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) and Rapid STP (RSTP). The misconfiguration of these protocols can cause outages from 30 to 52 seconds. In mission-critical environments, such as Satellite Control Centers (SCC), such delays can harm mission success. This paper proposes LAN configurations to reduce network outage times during link or device failures. Our configurations reduce outage time from 52 seconds to just 10 milliseconds, enhancing network reliability and efficiency in mission-critical environments.
