TACTIC: Tactical AR/VR Configurable Tracker Investigating Compactness Limits in the Metaverse

The rise of Metaverse technologies has transformed military training by enabling immersive, high-fidelity simulation environments. A key requirement in these augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR) systems is the ability to precisely localize physical objects in real time to ensure spatial alignment between real and virtual worlds. In this paper, we introduce TACTIC: Tactical AR/VR Configurable Tracker Investigating Compactness Limits in the Metaverse, an RF-based head-mounted tracking framework designed to localize the nozzle of a firearm with sub-millimeter accuracy using a passive corner reflector tag. The primary objective of this work is to investigate how compact the head-mounted transceiver array can be while still enabling accurate localization. Specifically, we analyze the relationship between the spacing of transceivers on the headgear and the maximum reliable tracking distance to the firearm nozzle. Using theoretical bounds derived from the Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB), we evaluate how geometric dilution of precision (GDOP) scales with array size and spatial separation. Our investigation results demonstrate that the minimum inter-transceiver distance on the head-mounted array is 15 cm to maintain acceptable localization accuracy for a nozzle located 50 cm away from the head-mounted array.
