Comparative Study of 6-Sector and 9-Sector DTC for Direct Drive-Wind Energy Conversion System

This paper presents a comparative analysis of the performance of a direct drive wind energy conversion system (DD-WECS) using 6-sector and 9-sector direct torque control (DTC) methods. DTC is a popular technique for controlling permanent magnet synchronous generators because it is easy to use, responds quickly, and enables independent torque and flux control. However, the number of sector divisions in the DTC switching scheme significantly influences system performance, affecting torque ripple, power quality, and overall efficiency. This study proposes a 9-sector DTC technique and compares it with the traditional 6-sector DTC to assess its effect on system performance. The performance of the proposed DTC is evaluated under variable wind speeds using the MATLAB/Simulink environment. It is evident from the MATLAB simulation results that the performance of the proposed DTC method is better than the conventional method with less ripple in torque and speed, which improves the power quality and system stability. The increase in the number of sectors in the proposed DTC provides more precise torque and flux control, resulting in smoother operation. It emphasises the importance of proper machine control to enhance the efficiency of WECS.
