Gambling practices, peer pressure, and their implications for youth mental health in Nigeria: A review
This theoretical paper examines the interplay between gambling behaviors and peer pressure among Nigerian youths, focusing on their mental wellbeing. Despite the growing prevalence of gambling in Nigeria, particularly among adolescents and young adults, peer pressure remains an under-researched variable influencing these behaviors. Drawing on Self-Determination Theory, the paper explores how peer dynamics can undermine youths' psychological needs, leading to maladaptive coping mechanisms such as gambling. The evidence indicates that peer pressure not only increases the likelihood of gambling participation but also exacerbates the risks of psychological distress, addiction, and social dysfunction. The paper also discusses the implications of these behaviors on mental health and suggests directions for future research and intervention strategies.
