THE ROLE OF INTERNAL CONTROLS IN DETECTING AND PREVENTING FRAUD: EVIDENCE FROM RECENT AUDIT FAILURES

Fraud remains a persistent challenge in corporate governance, financial reporting, and audit quality, leading to severe financial losses and reputational damage for organizations. The role of internal controls in detecting and preventing fraudulent activities has become increasingly significant in light of major corporate scandals, including Enron (2001), WorldCom (2002), and Wirecard (2020). This study examines the effectiveness of internal control mechanisms in fraud prevention, focusing on theoretical perspectives, case studies of audit failures, and best practices for strengthening financial oversight. The research is structured around three core objectives: (1) analyzing the relationship between internal control weaknesses and fraud occurrences, (2) identifying common deficiencies in audit failures, and (3) proposing best practices to enhance internal control frameworks. Drawing upon the COSO Internal Control-Integrated Framework (2013) and Fraud Triangle Theory (Cressey, 1953), this study highlights governance failures, risk assessment inadequacies, and auditor shortcomings as critical contributors to financial fraud. The findings underscore that segregation of duties, real-time transaction monitoring, technological advancements in fraud detection (AI, blockchain), and enhanced regulatory enforcement are essential in mitigating fraud risks. The study concludes that continuous improvements in corporate governance, regulatory compliance, and internal control mechanisms are imperative for financial integrity. Organizations must adopt a proactive fraud risk management approach, integrating data analytics, forensic accounting, and auditor independence reforms to strengthen fraud prevention measures. This research contributes to the ongoing discourse on financial transparency and accountability, offering insights for regulators, auditors, and corporate executives in enhancing fraud detection mechanisms
