Microcredentials for Lifelong Education Innovation: Analysis of Domestic and International University Cases and Policy Challenges

Amid rapid industrial changes and digital transformation, the demand for lifelong learning is growing. Micro-credentials have emerged as a flexible, modular certification method that acknowledges specific skills and competencies beyond traditional degrees. This study explores the potential of micro-credentials as a lifelong learning strategy by analyzing cases from domestic and international universities. While Korean universities are still in the early stages of adoption, facing challenges such as limited institutional autonomy and lack of standardized recognition, overseas institutions actively use micro-credentials to bridge formal education and workforce needs. By collaborating with industries and integrating them into lifelong learning systems, they enhance learners' practical outcomes. The study proposes that micro-credentials can serve as an innovative model for lifelong education and suggests policy tasks such as legal frameworks, standardized certification systems, and increasing social awareness.
