Discourses of Losers on the Meiji–Boshin Centennial Commemoration

During Japan's period of rapid economic growth, the Meiji–Boshin Centennial Commemoration highlighted the past that underpinned Aizu's ‘present’ through modernization, industrialization, and urbanization after the Boshin War. The Meiji–Boshin Centennial Commemoration was seen as an opportunity for the Aizu community to unite and seek new economic breakthroughs. During this period, the history of the Military City Aizu was not completely forgotten, but rather reconstructed in conjunction with the commemorative event. As the diverse memories of those who lived during the war period intersected, the landscape of Aizu's memories and forgettings was being rewritten.
