Nanoparticles Enable Twin‐Roll Casting of Ductile Al–Mg–Si Alloys with High Fe Content

The accumulation of Fe is a challenge in secondary aluminum recycling, which is generally believed to reduce ductility. This work presents a new design of Al–Mg–Si alloys with high Fe content fabricated by twin‐roll casting (TRC), showing good tensile properties. Compared to the alloy prepared by conventional casting (permanent mold casting), the Fe‐rich intermetallic phases are refined in TRC alloys due to the high cooling rate. The TRC alloys usually have serious center segregation, and the addition of TiC nanoparticles mitigates the center segregation. High Fe content promotes the formation of dispersoids during the solid solution treatment, and weakens texture after solution treatment due to the Zener drag of dispersoids. High Fe content and TiC nanoparticles evidently improve the strength and elongation of the TRC Al–Mg–Si alloys.
