March 31st between suits and uniforms: the anniversary of the coup by the lens of Estadão

This article explores how O Estado de São Paulo reports the anniversaries of the 1964 coup using photography by analyzing six editions of March 31, one per decade. In them, the newspaper creates a visual narrative that reorganizes the civil-military dictatorship through the protagonism of individuals who made up its official face. The emphasis given to dictator presidents, as well as other politicians and officers of the Armed Forces, is interrupted in a punctual manner, mainly to allude to two topics: the popular support and the alleged combative role of the press. This way of remembering history ends up leaving partially aside or completely hiding important aspects of the dictatorial regime, forming a blocked and/or manipulated memory.
