Blockchain-Based Supply Chain for Coffee Industry: Limitations and Its Applications

The global coffee industry faces challenges related to transparency, traceability, and fair compensation for farmers due to complex supply chains, price manipulation, and fraudulent certifications. Blockchain technology offers a solution by providing decentralized, immutable ledgers that enhance traceability, ensure fair trade, and streamline financial transactions. Smart contracts can automate payments, reduce intermediaries, and ensure farmers receive fair compensation. Blockchain adoption brings benefits such as higher farmer incomes, fraud reduction, increased consumer trust, and improved sustainability. However, challenges like scalability, interoperability, regulatory concerns, and stake-holder adoption must be addressed. This paper examines real-world case studies of blockchain implementation in the coffee sector, analyzing its impact, limitations, and lessons learned. Additionally, it explores prospects, including decentralized marketplaces, smart contracts for enforcing fair trade, and ethical coffee ecosystems that leverage transparent supply chain data. By increasing visibility across the coffee supply chain, blockchain can help build a more equitable and sustainable industry, benefiting all stakeholders, from farmers to consumers. Despite existing challenges, blockchain has the potential to transform the global coffee trade by fostering trust, efficiency, and fairness, ultimately ensuring that coffee production aligns with ethical and sustainable practices while empowering small-scale farmers worldwide.
