BestNet: Advancing MNIST Handwriting Recognition
Modern digit classifiers often chase complexity, piling on increasingly deeper and more intricate layers in pursuit of marginal performance gains. This trend frequently demands exponentially greater model complexity, computational resources and training time. This paper introduces BestNet, a lightweight Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) that redefines the tradeoff between simplicity, efficiency and effectiveness— delivering strong performance without unnecessary architectural expand. The proposed model achieves 99.998% training accuracy and 99.585% test accuracy on MNIST dataset in just 25 epochs— without relying on data augmentation, ensembling, or heavy regularization strategies. Rather than inflating the model's depth or width our approach focusses on reducing redundancy in training data and streamlining the learning process itself. Despite its simplicity, BestNet delivers performance improvements over the most advanced existing systems, suggesting that achieving high precision in handwritten digit recognition doesn't necessarily require overly complex architectures. This work sparks a broader reconsideration of how far minimalism can go in deep learning networks and digit recognition.
