Exposing Sybil Attacks: A New Paradigm for WSN Defense
Sybil attacks present a significant challenge to the security and reliability of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Multiple fictitious identities are created by malicious entities to interfere with network operation. Detecting and mitigating Sybil attacks is crucial for preserving the integrity and trustworthiness of WSNs, especially in critical use cases such as environmental monitoring and surveillance. This paper investigates various strategies for identifying and preventing Sybil attacks in WSNs, emphasizing the application of machine learning techniques. It reviews existing approaches that detect Sybil attack by analyzing irregular behaviors and network patterns and introduces innovative methods leveraging supervised machine learning to enhance detection accuracy and efficiency. Furthermore, the study explores how machine learning can be integrated with other security mechanisms to improve Sybil attack prevention. Empirical evaluations and case studies illustrate the effectiveness of machine learning-based methods in addressing these threats, highlighting their potential to bolster the security and resilience of WSNs in practical settings.
