Research and Application of an Evaluation Method for Technology Gaps in AI Hardware between Countries

At present, the development levels of artificial intelligence (AI) hardware technology vary significantly among different countries, each possessing distinct characteristics in different technical fields and dimensions. To gain a deeper understanding of the technological gaps within specific categories of AI hardware among different countries, this paper proposes an evaluation model for AI hardware that uses the paper activity index, paper citation index, patent activity index, and patent citation index to measure technology gaps. The model effectively assesses the technology gaps in different AI hardware technology subitems among China, the U.S., Japan, South Korea, India, Germany, France, Canada, the U.K., Italy and Spain, helping to understand the global position of China in fields like smart chips, intelligent sensors, material technology, and hardware application. Also, it identifies key areas requiring intensified efforts. In this case study, the evaluation method reveals the progress of different countries with specific characteristics in the field of AI hardware, and its practicality and effectiveness are verified.
