Broadband Dual-Linearly Polarized Reconfigurable Reflectarray for Beam-Steering and RCS Reduction

This letter presents a dual linear polarization (LP) reconfigurable reflectarray (RRA) for broadband beam-steering and radar cross-section (RCS) reducing. The reflective element employs a symmetric polygonal patch integrated with four PIN-diodes, enabling 1-bit reflection phase control for dual LP operation across the X-band (8.04-12.22 GHz). By modulating the phase encoding state of the array elements, the RRA can achieve time-division duplex electromagnetic wave manipulation. Through 1-bit quantized array synthesis and dynamic element phase modulation, the RRA demonstrates two-dimensional beam-steering capability under dual LP incidence. Additionally, when elements are randomly encoded, it achieves broadband RCS reduction for arbitrary polarization. As the verification, a prototype consisting of 16×16 independently controlled elements was fabricated and tested. The prototype exhibits a peak gain of 18.46 dBi at 10 GHz with 19.5% aperture efficiency (AE), a 3-dB gain fractional bandwidth (FBW) of 28%, and an in-band -10 dB RCS reduction FBW of 47.7% under normal incidence. The proposed RRA concept and specific design have potential applications in low-observable radars and other wireless systems.
