Workplace conflicts - challenges and solutions

In conflict management, the ability to resolve conflicts is placed on the same level - sometimes even considered more important - than planning, communicating, motivating, and decision-making. Conflicts within the work team are an inevitable aspect of an organization's existence and should not necessarily be viewed as destructive. Conflict resolution becomes a necessity, involving the initiation of dialogue and communication between individuals and groups and the adoption of a reconciliatory language. As a complex process, conflict management includes various types of actions: forecasting, prevention or stimulation, and resolution of conflict. Within organizational conflict management, the following stages can be identified: resolution based on mutual reconciliation between opposing parties; ending the conflict through symmetry; ending the conflict through asymmetric resolution; de-escalating the conflict without transforming it into a new one; gradual extinguishment of the conflict; peaceful settlement with the help of a neutral third party; resolution by redirecting attention, conditions, and resources of the competing parties toward shared values and goals. Conflict resolution is achieved using the following primary tools: administrative, organizational, social, psychological, and educational means. It is also important to respect several management principles in conflict resolution: the principle of valuing psychological consequences, systemic analysis of causes, avoidance of unilateral blame, neutrality, and conflict prevention. The article describes several useful methods for resolving workplace conflicts, including the "Conflict Map," "My Position in Conflict" technique, "Conflict Window," the "Algorithm" method, the ADORE method, and the "Kipling Questions" method.
