Explanatory models of the oncology patient's attitude towards his disease
The present article explores the psychological perceptions of illness and health, as well as various theoretical models that explain patients' attitudes toward illness and treatment. Illness is often associated with suffering and weakness, and therapeutic success depends significantly on the patient's morale and psychological adaptation. Theoretical models described in the paper conceptualize illness in different ways: as a life experience, punishment, enemy, or an opportunity for personal reevaluation. The article also outlines various emotional reactions to illness - such as anxiety, depression, denial, and isolation - alongside different coping strategies, whether problem-focused or emotion-focused.
