Environmental Management in Rice Farming and Its Contribution to Regional Development In Flores de Goiás, Goiás, Brazil

Objective: The objective of this study is to evaluate the extent to which the environmental management adopted in rice farming activities contributes to boosting local socioeconomic development in the municipality of Flores de Goiás, Goiás, Brazil. Theoretical Framework: The main concepts used refer to the sustainability tripod and good agricultural production practices. Method: The methodology adopted for this research involves the use of a qualitative approach, with the application of questionnaires to five rice farmers, addressing irrigation practices, energy use, water conservation strategies, soil management and waste disposal. Results and Discussion: The results revealed the predominance of flood irrigation, combined with the use of electrical and solar energy sources, water reuse, and monitoring of water consumption. The use of balanced fertilization and proper disposal of pesticide containers was also identified, demonstrating a partial commitment to sustainability. However, structural challenges persist, such as high costs for environmentally sustainable technologies and limited government support. It was found that local rice farming contributes to job creation, infrastructure improvements, and increased family income, but has a limited impact on food security and reducing rural exodus. Research Implications: Environmental management, although relevant in the context studied, requires increased institutional and financial support to enhance its effectiveness. The importance of future research that delves deeper into the interrelationships between production practices, environmental preservation, and social inclusion is highlighted. Originality/Value: This study contributes to the literature by demonstrating in practice how farmers implement scientifically recommended production practices. The relevance and value of this research are evident in the statements made by participants.
