Structure of jammed states toward social balance
Social balance refers to an ideal equilibrium state in society where everyone shares all sentiments with everyone else at all times. This balance is a kind of paradise for the society, and the absolute minimum energy for a physical system modeling it. The system has many other collective states, serving as local minima, called jammed states. We introduce a nonstochastic dynamics that uses the rugged terrain of the energy landscape of the jammed states to approach balance. When approximating society as made up of disjoint groups, each group having its own independent sentiments, we show that a jammed state dictates having three such groups. Our dynamics shows that in approach to balance, two groups evolve together keeping the third in a saturated growth state. This is an emergent behavior happening as a result of jamming, along with evolving at stepwise minimum energy. We ask whether in real-world data, e.g. in a large set of social media, such specific evolution toward balance exists.
