Prowincjonalna wersja komunizmu w węgierskim filmie fabularnym od lat 60. XX w. Przykłady, sposoby ukazania, analiza
This article examines the theme of communism in the Hungarian provinces and its various transformations as reflected in post-war Hungarian cinema. The first part of the study outlines the specificity of the Hungarian notion of the province (vidék) within its historical and cultural context. The dichotomy between Budapest and the rest of the country played a crucial role in shaping both the Stalinist and Kádár regimes, each of which developed its own regional variations alongside official propaganda narratives. Hungarian filmmakers have captured these complexities in striking ways, which is why the second part of the article offers an analysis of selected feature films. These works span from the 1960s to the present day and display notable differences in narrative approach, ideological interpretation, and genre. Alongside satirical films and comedies, the corpus includes social dramas and classic crime thrillers. Some of these films attempt to seriously reckon with the Stalinist past, while others approach its legacy with a more ironic or playful tone. Across these diverse examples, the multifaceted nature of provincial communism—and its cinematic representation—is brought into focus.
