Methods for monitoring the effectiveness of rabies vaccination in foxes in Romania

Rabies control in wild species, particularly foxes (Vulpes vulpes), is one of the major challenges in preventive veterinary medicine, with significant implications for public health, animal health and biodiversity conservation. In this context, oral rabies vaccination in foxes has become an essential component of national and European rabies control programs, being widely implemented in many European countries, including Romania. Monitoring the effectiveness of oral rabies vaccination (ORV) campaigns in wild carnivore populations is based on the evaluation of two critical indicators: tetracycline detection (TTC) and the presence of rabies virus neutralizing antibodies (RVNA) after vaccination.
