Exploring the pathways to EV adoption: The mediating role of behavioral intentions in financial, social and environmental determinants

This study investigates the influence of various factors on the willingness to recommend and purchase electric vehicles (EVs). Specifically, it examines how financial incentives, charging infrastructure, social reinforcement, environmental concerns, and price impact consumer intentions and behavior in the EV market. The study further explores the mediating role of behavioral intentions in shaping consumer preferences. The research employs Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to analyze data gathered from a structured questionnaire survey. Respondents were surveyed on their perspectives concerning EV-related factors, intentions, and overall willingness to recommend and purchase EVs. The SEM approach enabled an in-depth analysis of both direct and indirect relationships between independent variables and the dependent variable, focusing on the mediating effects of behavioral intentions. The findings reveal that financial incentives, charging infrastructure, and environmental concerns significantly contribute to favorable behavioral intentions, which, in turn, positively influence consumers willingness to recommend and purchase EVs. The study also highlights price as a critical factor that directly impacts purchasing intentions, while social reinforcement was observed to have a more nuanced effect. This research provides a comprehensive examination of key determinants influencing EV adoption, particularly addressing the mediating role of behavioral intentions. The findings offer valuable insights for policymakers, marketers, and stakeholders to enhance EV adoption strategies by aligning incentives, infrastructure, and information campaigns with consumer expectations and behaviors.
