Investigating the organs at risk (OAR) received dose during prostate cancer therapy using intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and 3D conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT): A comparison study

Radiotherapy domain is known to impose undesired risk of radiation to normal tissue surrounding the tumor. So, the treatment planning systems are developing with time to introduce a perfect treatment. Organs at risks surrounding prostate tumors are sensitive to high doses of radiation. This study is aimed at comparing the efficiency of the three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT) and intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) techniques during the treatment of prostate cancer. A cross-sectional study was performed in Middel Euphrate Csancer Center, Najaf , Iraq. A 25 patients with prostate tumor were enrolled. They underwent CT scans from imaging then treated with x-ray beam using three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy(3D-CRT) and IMRT planning. Using the 3DCRT technique ensure certain level of protection to the left and right head femur, while the IMRT demonsrate a better protection limit to the left and right head femur. All the doses to the organs at risk are within the tolerances. The results illustrates that the IMRT is even better in term of protecting most of the sensitive normal tissue structures, while other organs need to be protected using the IMRT technique depending on the patient status.

All the doses to the organs at risk are within the tolerances. The results illustrates that the IMRT is even better in term of protecting most of the sensitive normal tissue structures, while other organs need to be protected using the IMRT technique depending on the patient status.
