Innovation Culture in Ghana: Local Agency, Actor-Networks, and the Social Shaping of Motor Vehicles

This paper examines the dynamics of innovation in postcolonial Ghana through a case study of Kantanka Automobile Company Limited, a locally branded vehicle manufacturer. It explores how colonial legacies, global dependencies, and everyday socio-technical realities intersect to shape Ghana’s innovation culture. Drawing on postcolonial technoscience, the Social Construction of Technology, and Actor-Network Theory, the analysis demonstrates that innovation extends beyond technical novelty or global market success. It emerges through social entanglements and everyday negotiations among people, tools, and institutions. The Kantanka case highlights the tension between symbolic expressions of national pride and the material realities of production, affordability, and infrastructural constraints. Comparisons with African platforms such as M-PESA and Farmerline further show that local knowledge, when supported by appropriate technological and institutional ecosystems, can produce contextually grounded and scalable innovations. The findings suggest that Ghanaian innovation culture does not lack creativity but rather suffers from a misalignment between state support, infrastructural capacity, policy choices, and public perception. By showing how local actors draw on embodied expertise and assert their agency within constrained systems, this paper contributes to decolonial approaches in Science and Technology Studies. It calls for more context-sensitive understandings of innovation that prioritize hybrid solutions, collaborative design, and socio-political inclusion of marginalized groups.
