Direct (phaseresolving) model of surface waves

Abstract The mathematical formulation and description of a numerical model of surface waves (named as TriDWave model) in a periodic domain is given. The model is designed to simulate evolution of three-dimensional waves both in adiabatic approximation and in configuration which takes into account the physical processes of energy input and dissipation. The description of the model structure, the purpose of its various blocks, as well as the schemes for starting and resumingcalculation and monitoring of the results, are given. The dynamic part of the program that performs solution at each time step, the blocks of operational processing and registration of the results activated are described. The recommendations are given for organizing the postprocessing of the results. The general principles used to parameterize energy exchange between waves and wind and various types of dissipation including wave breaking, are discussed. The main feature of the model is its ability to switch from a detailed three-dimensional scheme to a simplified two-dimensional scheme, which speeds up the calculations by a factor of 10–15. The statistical characteristics of the results reproduced by an original Full Wave Model (FWM), as well as an accelerated wave model (AWM), coincide with reasonable accuracy.
