Calculation of the correction factor of alternative gases on the microdosimetric spectra at different neutron energies

Abstract This study attempts to design and develop microdosimeters with optimal accuracy based on alternative gases to make an accurate microdosimeter. So we examined alternative gases, and all the effects of these gases on neutron microdosimetric spectra studied. In this research, using the Geant4-10-4 code we simulated the neutron point source with energies of 0.1, 1, and 10 MeV. To compare between different states, total microdosimetric quantities, and these statistical uncertainties in each case were calculated and reported. To replace gases using the SRIM (Stopping and Range of Ions in Matter) code data and assuming that the stopping power curve in terms of energy for methane and propane gases is similar to the methane and propane based tissue-equivalent gases, we calculated density correction factors. These correction factors provided suitable conditions for the replacement of the methane and propane gases instead of the methane and propane-based tissue equivalent gas in the microdosimetric cavity. The density correction factors for methane and propane gases are 0.781 and 0.864 respectively. Therefore, we were able to use these alternative gases to make this precise and practical device with good agreement and with a small difference in the microdosimetric spectra.
