Relationship between anterior cruciate ligament rupture and severity of bone bruise and meniscal tears in acute knee injury patients with knee MRI imaging

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures are common knee injuries that occur due to complex movement such as in sports activity or as a result of trauma to the knee region. In most cases, ACL rupture is usually followed by bone bruises and meniscal tears. MRI imaging is one modality that has a high sensitivity and specificity for diagnosing ACL conditions. This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between ACL rupture and the severity of bone bruises and meniscal tears in acute knee injury patients with knee MRI imaging.METHODS: This study was a cross-sectional study at Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital, Makassar. Samples utilizing medical record data of ACL rupture patients who performed knee MRI examination. The severity of bone bruising, the level of meniscal tears, and the degree of ACL rupture will be evaluated based on the imaging data. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square Test.RESULTS: A total of 50 subjects met the study criteria. 34 subjects were sport injury and 16 subjects were non sport injury. In this study, the Chi-square Test resulted high prevalence of horizontal meniscal tear in grade 3 ACL rupture but no statistically significant correlation, this study also showed there is no significant correlation between ACL rupture and severity of bone bruises (P>0.05).CONCLUSIONS: This study found that there was no significant association between ACL rupture and the degree of bone bruises and meniscal condition.
