Ordered Pt3Co Nanoparticles as Electrocatalyst for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

The facile and efficient fabrication of small-sized Pt-based intermetallic catalysts represents a critical requirement for fuel cells but remains challenging. Herein, we report an external space confinement annealing strategy to synthesize a small-sized Pt3Co intermetallic catalyst. This method inhibits nanoparticle migration and sintering by creating a low-flow microenvironment. X-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy confirm the formation of a well-defined L12 ordered phase. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals stronger electron interactions and a reduced d-band for Pt3Co/C, which delivers 0.46 A mg–1 mass activity and retains 73.89% activity postdurability test.
