Networked Power Converter Control Under Communication Uncertainties: Modbus TCP vs. IEC 61850 SV Protocols
The integration of networked control in photovoltaic (PV) parks introduces critical challenges related to communication reliability and protocol efficiency. This paper presents a comparative analysis of Modbus TCP and IEC 61850 Sampled Values (SV) protocols for power converter coordination under real communication conditions and delays. Using a real-time Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulation, we assess the impact of protocol-specific transmission mechanisms on system stability, voltage regulation, and response time. Results highlight key trade-offs, such as Modbus TCP’s delay-induced discretization effects versus IEC 61850 SV’s transport delay impact on control performance. The findings provide essential insights into the selection of communication protocols for converter coordination, ensuring robust and efficient operation under uncertain network conditions.
