Next Generation Grid Control: A Modular and Scalable Event-Driven Architecture for Monitoring and Control of Power Systems

The increasing complexity of modern power systems, driven by the integration of renewable energy sources and decentralized energy resources, necessitates a paradigm shift in grid control and monitoring architectures. This paper presents a modular and scalable event-driven grid control system designed to enhance flexibility, interoperability, and resilience. By leveraging digital twins, microservice architectures, and event-driven processing, the proposed approach enables real-time grid state assessment, improved fault detection, and seamless integration with legacy systems and emerging technologies. A prototypical implementation demonstrates the system’s effectiveness in a simulated medium-voltage grid scenario. Future work will focus on expanding the system to low-voltage networks, integrating AI-based methodologies for enhanced state assessment and anomaly detection, strengthening cybersecurity measures, and optimizing performance for large-scale deployments. The proposed framework represents a significant step toward the next generation of grid management systems, providing a foundation for future advancements in energy system digitalization.
