Novel Preventive Control Technique for Voltage Instability of Modern Power Networks
Voltage Stability Assessment (VSA) is used for instability prediction and mitigation of power systems. The integration of Renewable Energy Resources (RESs) can cause voltage instability problems in power networks due to output power fluctuation and operational conflicts with conventional control devices. This study develops a novel preventive control technique for voltage instability in modern power networks. The proposed method depends on deriving a voltage stability index based on Thevenin’s theorem. Sensitivity analysis is then used to evaluate the change in voltage stability index to control variables. The cheapest and the most effective control variables can then be selected based on their ranking. The proposed method was tested on the IEEE 118-bus system to show its validity for large-scale power systems. The results show that the proposed technique requires less computational time and is suitable for practical power systems.
