Reactive Power Retrieval at the TSO/DSO Interface under Consideration of real-time System Operation

Due to the decommissioning of conventional power plants and growing challenges in reactive power balancing, reactive power is becoming increasingly important in congestion management by German system operators. As conventional power plants decline and demand rises due to energy transit, reactive power from renewable sources gains relevance. Since these are typically connected to distribution networks, attention shifts to the TSO/DSO interface. Preliminary research explored the applicability of Redispatch 2.0, a process originally designed for active power, to the assessment of reactive power capability. The present paper investigates the impact of unconsidered operational events on reactive power retrieval through a case study. The objective is to derive requirements that enhance the reliability of reactive power provision in real-time operations by identifying key characteristics and impacts of such events. The results provide insights for improving coordination and system stability in a transforming energy landscape with high shares of distributed renewable generation.
