Static and Dynamic Security Assessment of a Highly Meshed Continental European Network Reinforced by Multiterminal HVDC Systems

The reinforcement of the continental European network by high voltage direct current systems and its assessment require suitable assessment methods in order to holistically capture the advantages and disadvantages of the corresponding grid integration. This paper presents a methodological approach in which, additionally to cost-based indicators, evaluation parameters in the context of grid security and system stability are included in the planning of hybrid AC/DC grid structures, so that (MT-) HVDC structures can be evaluated and advantageous topologies can be identified. The method is applied and validated based on a grid model representing the continental European transmission grid.

Abstract

The reinforcement of the continental European network by high voltage direct current systems and its assessment require suitable assessment methods in order to holistically capture the advantages and disadvantages of the corresponding grid integration. This paper presents a methodological approach in which, additionally to cost-based indicators, evaluation parameters in the context of grid security and system stability are included in the planning of hybrid AC/DC grid structures, so that (MT-) HVDC structures can be evaluated and advantageous topologies can be identified. The method is applied and validated based on a grid model representing the continental European transmission grid.
