Evaluating Electric Road Systems for Freight Transport in Sweden: A Simulation-Based Study on Trans-European Transport Network
The electrification of long-haul freight transport is essential for reducing emissions and achieving sustainable mobility. However, battery-electric trucks (BETs) face significant barriers, including limited range, high battery weight, and prolonged charging times, which hinder their widespread adoption for long-distance travel. Electric Road Systems (ERS) offer a compelling solution by providing energy to BETs while in motion, reducing dependence on large battery packs and decreasing the frequency of charging stops. This paper explores the feasibility of ERS along the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) and its core corridors for electrifying long-haul freight transport. Results indicate that implementing ERS only on TEN-T core corridors can support 92% of BET long-distance trips and substantially reduce the required number of stationary megawatt chargers from 1749 to 574 for long-distance freight transport electrification.
