Experimental Validation of Dynamic Virtual Power Plant Concept using H∞ Control Techniques

This paper presents the implementation and experimental validation of a Dynamic Virtual Power Plant (DVPP) control design approach utilizing ${{\mathcal{H}}_{\infty} }$ Matching Control. The DVPP aggregates two programmable inverters configured with Dynamic Participation Factors (DPFs) to emulate primary frequency control in low-inertia grids. The experimental study investigates the impact of varying DPF cut-off frequencies on the DVPP’s ability to stabilize frequency deviations and track active power setpoints. Results from laboratory tests show that higher DPF cut-off frequencies improve system responsiveness in high-frequency ranges but introduce steady-state errors, revealing a trade-off between speed and accuracy. The experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the DVPP in providing instantaneous reserves and mitigating frequency deviations, even under dynamic grid conditions simulated with a synchronous generator.
