Experimental Performance Evaluation of MMWave Radars
This paper presents an experimental evaluation of the performance of three millimeter wave (mmWave) radars: two FMCW radars, i.e., IWR6843ISK and IWR1843BOOST, and one CW radar, i.e., Sense2Go Pulse. The evaluation was conducted in controlled indoor and outdoor scenarios, utilizing a measurement protocol tailored to the capabilities of each radar. Metrics such as detection rate, accuracy, and precision were considered, with a focus on non-contact monitoring applications. The results enable a comparison of the capabilities of each technology and radar, depending on the environment, and their applicability for people and motion detection tasks. The results highlight that the Sense2GoL Pulse radar performed best in terms of detection rate, with a longer range and consistent detections. The IWR6843ISK radar performed the worst outdoors, although it showed significant improvement indoors. The IWR1843BOOST radar offered a more balanced performance in both scenarios. Overall, the Sense2GoL radar was observed to improve its performance in outdoor conditions, while the IWR6843ISK and IWR1843BOOST radars performed better indoors.
