Some Aspects of Grid Friendly Use of Medium Voltage Direct Current Links in Schleswig-Holstein

This paper presents the results of the project ‘MVDC_Opt’ carried out with different distribution grid operators in Schleswig-Holstein/Northern Germany. The use of a medium voltage direct current (MVDC) link to increase the flexibility of the distribution grid in Schleswig-Holstein was discussed. To develop a control strategy, the MVDC line was modelled and integrated into a real grid model as an interconnection point for existing medium voltage distribution grids. It is assumed that the MVDC link provides an efficient possibility to increase the active power flow and at the same time manage the voltage in the grid. The project with workshops and jointly developed deliverables has familiarized the technology and characteristics of the MVDC link to grid operators. The study of typical grids provides information on grid combinations for which the integration of the link provides particularly high added value.
