Definitions and Capabilities of Grid Connected Power Electronic Converters
To this date there is no uniform understanding of terminology and capabilities in the field of research for control of Power-Electronic-Converters (PEC). The term "grid-forming" in particular is often used and linked to different attributes, which can lead to a lot of misunderstanding. In this paper, the terminology in the field of "grid-forming" control is examined and defined in order to create a uniform basis for future research and publications. The main objective of this study is to classify the terms and to develop precise definitions. To this end, the characteristic properties of different PEC-controls are described and illustrated by using simulations. Recommendations are then made regarding the selection of a control algorithm based on the conditions of the grid at the point of common coupling (PCC). Finally, some control algorithms from publications are classified into the newly designed terminology.
