A Novel Approach to Grid-Forming DC Bus Voltage Control with Zero Steady-State Error

Grid-forming (GFM) converters are valued for their role in stabilizing renewable energy systems. When integrated into high-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems, they could be required to operate in DC voltage control mode, which can conflict with GFM operation. This paper introduces a robust control design that links the DC grid voltage to the converter's power angle, effectively combining DC voltage regulation with grid-forming functionality. The design to tune the parameters of the controller is illustrated. The behaviour of the proposed controller is analysed and validated on a Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC)-based HVDC system with a point-to-point GFM-GFM configuration through electromagnetic transient simulations.
