Zymoseptoria-encoded Phytosulfokines: A novel mechanism for host manipulation?
Phytosulfokine (PSK) is a plant disulfated pentapeptide (Y(SO 3 H)IY(SO 3 )TQ).PSK signaling is involved in coping with abiotic and biotic stress and confers plant resistance against necrotrophic pathogens but increases susceptibility towards hemi-and biotrophic pathogens by modulating salicylate and jasmonate pathways. 1 Genes encoding proteins with PSK domains have been identified in 22 fungal species, including the hemibiotrophic wheat pathogen Zymoseptoria tritici, which causes systemic induced susceptibility in planta. 2,3
