PRESCRIÇÃO DE DEXAMETASONA EM PROCEDIMENTOS CIRÚRGICOS ODONTOLÓGICOS: QUANDO USAR?
ABSTRACT This study addresses the importance of dexamethasone in the context of dental surgery, with emphasis on procedures involving osteotomy and tooth sectioning, in which its action as a steroidal anti-inflammatory agent significantly reduces postoperative morbidity. The central issue focuses on the relevance of dexamethasone use in these procedures and the most appropriate timing for its administration. The main objective of the research is to demonstrate that, in complex extractions, detailed knowledge of surgical anatomy and the appropriate choice of surgical techniques are essential to minimize risks and complications. Dexamethasone, as well as methylprednisolone, is used via different routes — oral, intramuscular, submucosal, intravenous, or intramasseteric — in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative periods, providing effective control of the inflammatory response, reducing pain, edema, and trismus, and accelerating functional recovery. Clinical studies indicate that the timing and route of administration directly influence therapeutic efficacy. Although potential adverse effects may occur in specific populations, rational use based on scientific evidence makes dexamethasone an essential tool in dental surgical planning, ensuring greater comfort, safety, and quality of life for patients undergoing invasive procedures in the maxillofacial region. The research is bibliographic in nature, with qualitative and quantitative approaches, allowing a broad and in-depth understanding of the topic. Keywords: Dexamethasone; Tooth extraction; Osteotomy; Tooth sectioning; Inflammation.
