Teaching Paper: Impact Metrics Templates – Practical Tools for Measuring Non-Profit Effectiveness
Measuring impact is fundamental for non-profit organizations seeking to demonstrate accountability, improve program effectiveness, and secure ongoing support. Yet many organizations, especially in low-resource environments, struggle to design clear, feasible, and meaningful impact metrics. This Teaching Paper introduces two practical templates—Basic and Detailed Impact Metrics—developed to help organizations translate goals into measurable indicators. The templates include essential fields such as objectives, data sources, collection methods, frequency, and responsible persons, with the detailed version also incorporating baselines and targets. Grounded in established evaluation literature, this paper highlights how these tools can support evidence-based decision-making, promote organizational learning, and strengthen stakeholder trust. Practical guidance, a case study, and reflection questions are included to ensure accessibility for practitioners and to enrich academic dialogue on non-profit evaluation practices.
