“The Man of Tomorrow” and the social values of encounter groups in Carl Rogers’ teleology and pedagogical axiology

<ns3:p>This paper answers the question of how Carl Rogers perceived the ideal of upbringing of the man, in the form of a presentation of his little-known concept of the “Man of Tomorrow”. It also addresses the problem of how, according to Rogers, the negative processes within contemporary culture and civilisation can be halted and their main institutions, including education, transformed to ensure the survival and more spiritual development of the human species and the survival of the biosphere. Thus, we have Rogers' critique of contemporary institutions and the direction of civilisation and culture, evidence of the emergence of a new human being with a different personality structure already today, an analysis of institutions and actions directed against its spread, the causal potential of small and large encounter groups to bring about constructive peaceful and humanistic change in the functioning of contemporary institutions. In addition, the pedagogical values of encounter groups are revealed, and the directions of desirable change in contemporary societies and cultures are outlined by giving a principled value to the “humanistic element” implemented in these groups.</ns3:p>
