From Present Issues to Future Standards: Enhancing ASME B16.9 Compliance

Abstract JGC has been actively verifying whether manufacturers properly establish the fitting design according to ASME B16.9, even before the recent updates to the standard, and in some cases, has supported manufacturers in this establishment. The recent updates to ASME B16.9 have provided clearer and more comprehensive guidelines for the design of wrought steel fittings. Despite these improvements, some manufacturers continue to produce and sell fittings that do not comply with the updated standards. These non-compliant manufacturers can be categorized into three groups: those who incorrectly claim that the wall thickness of critical areas can be 87.5% of the nominal thickness, those who conduct design proof testing without integrating the results into their production processes, and those who knowingly disregard the ASME B16.9 standards without taking corrective action. This paper explores the current compliance issues within the industry, the extent of the verification required, and proposes specific improvements to the ASME B16.9 standard to eliminate non-compliant fittings. By addressing these issues, the industry can enhance safety, reliability, and overall compliance with the established standards. Furthermore, this paper will discuss the potential impact of these proposed improvements on the industry and provide recommendations for manufacturers to ensure adherence to the updated standards.
