PREVALENCE AND TYPE OF TEMPOROMANDIBULAR DISORDERS IN THE SURVEYED ADULTS WHO SOUGHT COUNSELLING AND TREATMENT

Data on the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) among adult patients in Ukraine remain limited. This study aims to assess the prevalence and characteristics of TMD in patients seeking dental care using the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD). Objective. To investigate and analyze the prevalence of clinical diagnoses of TMD in adults seeking dental care. Materials and methods. A screening survey was conducted among 355 patients (aged 18-68 years) who visited a university dental clinic. The DC/TMD Symptoms Questionnaire was used. Patients with symptoms of TMD underwent an in-depth clinical examination according to the DC/TMD Axis I protocol and were diagnosed according to the Taxonomic Classification of TMD. Results. The study showed that 25.92% of the subjects were diagnosed with TMD. The average age of the participants was 39.71 ± 8.53 years. Intra-articular disorders were diagnosed in 53.26% of patients, including disc displacement with reduction in 45.65%. Degenerative joint diseases were detected in 15.22% of the examined patients. Disorders of the masticatory muscles were diagnosed in 51.09% of patients, including local myalgia in 43.48% and myofascial pain in 7.61%. Headache associated with TMD was observed in 11.96% of cases. Conclusions. The results indicate a significant prevalence of TMD among adults seeking dental care, namely, 25.92%. The most common type of disorder in our sample was intra-articular disorders (53.26%), most commonly disc displacement with reduction (45.65%). Muscle disorders were mainly represented by localized myalgia (43.48%). TMD was detected more frequently in women than in men. The data obtained can be used to develop strategies for the early diagnosis and treatment of TMD.
