A Two-Step Method for Topology Identification and Hidden Nodes Detection in Distribution Networks

To achieve European Green Deal targets, advanced distribution network management practices are required to make optimal use of existing and future grid infrastructure. Such advanced network management approaches rely on network data, including the network topology. However, the network data are usually inaccurate or unavailable due to legacy issues. This paper presents a novel two-step method combining admittance matrix estimation and hidden nodes detection to identify unknown distribution topology in networks with limited smart meter coverage and without synchrophasors. Numerical results using the IEEE 33-bus feeders highlight its robustness and accuracy in complex scenarios.

Abstract

To achieve European Green Deal targets, advanced distribution network management practices are required to make optimal use of existing and future grid infrastructure. Such advanced network management approaches rely on network data, including the network topology. However, the network data are usually inaccurate or unavailable due to legacy issues. This paper presents a novel two-step method combining admittance matrix estimation and hidden nodes detection to identify unknown distribution topology in networks with limited smart meter coverage and without synchrophasors. Numerical results using the IEEE 33-bus feeders highlight its robustness and accuracy in complex scenarios.
