Comparison of Models for Replicating an Under-frequency Event in the Great Britain Power System

This paper proposes system frequency response (SFR) models of differing complexity to replicate a historical under-frequency event in the Great Britain power system. Both traditional turbine-governor models and a generic SFR model are used to represent the frequency responses of synchronous generators. Using measured data and public information, the proposed models are tuned and validated. Comparison between their performance provides insights into the advantages and limitations of the generic model. This paper focuses on revealing the necessary details that should be incorporated into an SFR model. In comparison to previous work in this field, this work comprehensively assesses whether a low-order generic model can be applied to depict the realistic frequency response dynamics of systems. Additionally, the contribution of combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plants and their complex operating regimes to frequency response of the system is investigated.
