Phasor Approximation Models Applicability Limits of Voltage Source Converters
Simulations of converter-dominant power systems draw into question the validity of phasor approximation (RMS) modelling in capturing relevant dynamics. Electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations can capture all the dynamics of power converters, but are resource-demanding and time-consuming. Hence, this paper is to identify when phasor-mode simulations are still applicable after neglecting the dynamics of network and/or the relevant parts of power converters. The applicability limits of voltage controlled- and current controlled-GFM and GFL phasor models are tested in a Thévenin equivalent and a modified IEEE 39-bus system. Two types of phasor modelling are studied. Eigenvalue maps and participation factors analysis are used to find the limits.
